About
Stine Tuvesson is a plant geneticist whose pioneering work in molecular breeding has significantly advanced resistance to devastating viral diseases in winter barley. Her research focuses on developing marker-assisted selection strategies to combat Barley Mild Mosaic Virus (BaMMV) and Barley Yellow Mosaic Virus (BaYMV), which threaten cereal yields across Europe. In her landmark 1998 study, Tuvesson established a large-scale molecular breeding protocol for the ym4 resistance gene, creating a codominant STS marker from an RFLP probe that enabled breeders to fix virus resistance in early generations. This work, cited 24 times, provided a practical, high-throughput framework for integrating DNA markers into conventional barley breeding programs. By translating fundamental genetic mapping into an applied tool, Tuvesson helped accelerate the development of resistant winter barley varieties, reducing reliance on chemical controls and protecting farmers from yield losses. Her contributions exemplify how molecular genetics can directly address agricultural challenges, and her marker system remains a reference point for breeding durable virus resistance in small-grain cereals.
