About

Stefano Mastrobuoni is a leading cardiac surgeon specializing in minimally invasive mitral valve repair, with a particular focus on robotic-assisted techniques. His research has been instrumental in demonstrating the safety, efficacy, and reproducibility of robotic mitral valve repair for degenerative mitral regurgitation. In his landmark 2017 study, Mastrobuoni reported the outcomes of 134 robotic mitral valve repairs performed at a single European centre, establishing a benchmark for the procedure. He has since expanded this work, publishing a 7-year experience encompassing 226 patients, which showed excellent clinical and echocardiographic results and highlighted the learning curve associated with the technology. His “Bruxelles experience” paper further validated the long-term durability of robotic repair. With over 29 citations across his most-cited works, Mastrobuoni’s contributions have helped advance the adoption of robotic surgery in cardiac care, offering patients a less invasive alternative with outcomes comparable to traditional sternotomy. His work continues to shape best practices in robotic mitral valve repair.
