About
Sonia Desicato is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose work is reshaping the surgical management of genitourinary cancers, with a particular focus on testicular and renal malignancies. Her research centers on the refinement of minimally invasive robotic techniques, especially in high-stakes oncologic settings. Desicato’s most impactful contribution is her work on unilateral post-chemotherapy robot-assisted retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (PC-RPLND) for Stage II non-seminomatous germ cell tumors. Her 2023 study, with 10 citations, demonstrates how modified surgical templates can reduce morbidity while maintaining oncologic efficacy, offering a critical advance for patients after chemotherapy. More recently, she has led the first Italian experience with the da Vinci SP® single-port system for partial nephrectomy, performing the procedure via a novel supine anterior retroperitoneal access. This 2025 work, already garnering 3 citations, showcases her role as an early adopter of cutting-edge technology to enhance recovery and precision. Desicato’s contributions are defining a new standard in robotic urologic oncology, balancing radical cancer control with minimally invasive innovation.
