About

Dr. Luigi Castaldo is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose research focuses on advancing minimally invasive robotic surgery for urologic cancers, particularly prostate, kidney, and testicular malignancies. His major contributions include demonstrating the prognostic value of the preoperative prostate health index in predicting early biochemical recurrence after radical prostatectomy (26 citations), and developing innovative single-port robotic techniques for nephroureterectomy and partial nephrectomy via supine anterior retroperitoneal access. Dr. Castaldo has also made significant strides in preserving sexual and reproductive function in cancer survivors, evidenced by his work on unilateral post-chemotherapy robot-assisted retroperitoneal lymph node dissection for non-seminomatous germ cell tumors and his novel one-step approach combining robotic radical cystectomy with concomitant penile prosthesis implantation. His recent publications on the da Vinci SP® system represent the first Italian experiences with single-port robotic urologic surgery, showcasing his leadership in adopting cutting-edge technology. With a growing body of work spanning from 2015 to 2025, Dr. Castaldo’s research consistently emphasizes reducing surgical morbidity while maintaining oncologic efficacy, making him a key figure in the evolution of robotic urologic oncology.
