About
Shun-Fa Hung is a pioneering urological surgeon whose research centers on minimally invasive surgical management of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), a malignancy with notably higher prevalence in Taiwan. As a key member of the Taiwan Robot Urological Surgery Team (TRUST), Hung has been instrumental in advancing robot-assisted laparoscopic nephroureterectomy (RANU) as a standard treatment for UTUC. His landmark 2014 study, with 17 citations, reported the first multi-institutional TRUST experience, demonstrating the feasibility and safety of RANU through a novel re-docking technique that optimizes surgical ergonomics and oncologic outcomes. This work directly addressed the unique epidemiological challenges of UTUC in Taiwan, where incidence is elevated—particularly among females and patients on renal replacement therapy—compared to Western populations. Hung’s contributions have helped establish robotic surgery as a viable, less-invasive alternative for complex upper tract tumors, improving recovery times while maintaining oncologic rigor. His research continues to shape urological practice in Asia, providing critical evidence for adapting advanced surgical technologies to regional disease patterns.
