About

Shuji Toda is a pioneering figure in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, whose work has fundamentally advanced the field of vascular graft development. His research focuses on creating functional, scaffold-free tubular tissues using bio-3D printing technology, addressing the critical clinical need for small-caliber vascular prostheses. Toda’s most impactful contribution is his landmark 2015 study, which demonstrated that bio-3D-printed tubular tissues, when implanted in rat aortae, undergo remarkable remodeling and endothelialization—a process essential for preventing thrombosis and regulating vasomotor tone. This work, cited nearly 300 times, has opened new avenues for developing living vascular grafts that integrate seamlessly with the host’s circulatory system. By overcoming the limitations of synthetic prostheses, which lack endothelial cell coverage, Toda’s research has profound implications for cardiovascular surgery and tissue regeneration. His innovative approach not only showcases the potential of scaffold-free tissue engineering but also provides a foundation for future clinical applications, making him a key contributor to the quest for durable, biocompatible vascular replacements.
