Shiro Baba is a pioneering urological surgeon whose work has significantly advanced the understanding of sexual health outcomes after prostate cancer surgery and the refinement of minimally invasive adrenal procedures. His research is centered on improving postoperative quality of life for prostate cancer patients, with a particular focus on the trajectory of sexual health-related quality of life (HRQoL) following radical prostatectomy. In his highly cited 2011 study, Baba identified key factors that predict both early and late-phase declines in sexual HRQoL, providing crucial insights for patient counseling and postoperative care. This work, with 27 citations, has helped clinicians stratify risk and tailor recovery expectations. Earlier, Baba demonstrated surgical innovation with his 1999 paper on retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy via a lumbodorsal approach, a solo-surgery technique that reduced invasiveness and operative time. Garnering 26 citations, this contribution established a safer, more efficient method for adrenal tumor removal. Through these dual contributions—predictive modeling of sexual recovery and pioneering laparoscopic techniques—Baba has left a lasting impact on urological oncology and surgical practice, improving both functional outcomes and procedural safety for patients worldwide.
