About
Shamsul Masum is a leading colorectal surgery researcher at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence with surgical oncology. His work centers on two transformative themes: leveraging data analytics and AI to predict patient outcomes, and comparing robotic versus laparoscopic surgical techniques for rectal cancer. In a landmark population-based study of over 4,300 patients (25 citations), Masum demonstrated that AI models can accurately predict length of stay, readmission, and mortality after colorectal cancer surgery—paving the way for personalized perioperative care. He has also made seminal contributions to the robotic surgery debate. His propensity-score matched analysis of 5-year survival outcomes (10 citations) showed comparable long-term oncologic results between robotic and laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (TME), while his short-term RESOLUTION study (4 citations) detailed perioperative advantages.
