Shalom Kalnicki is a radiation oncologist whose career has made transformative contributions to the fields of stereotactic radiosurgery and head and neck oncology. He is best known as a pioneering figure in the application of CyberKnife frameless stereotactic radiosurgery to spinal lesions — a frontier that was largely unexplored when conventional radiotherapy lacked the precision needed for safe spinal targeting. His landmark 2004 study documenting clinical experience across 125 cases garnered 232 citations and helped establish spinal radiosurgery as a viable and effective treatment modality. Building on this, Kalnicki published a series of influential studies between 2002 and 2003 demonstrating the feasibility and efficacy of frameless, real-time image-guided radiosurgery for benign spinal tumors, sacral lesions, and other complex presentations, collectively accumulating hundreds of citations. More recently, his research has expanded into transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, examining its impact on survival outcomes and chemotherapy utilization.
