About
Dr. Seung Pil Jung is a pioneering surgeon whose research centers on minimally invasive and robotic techniques for thyroid and breast cancer surgery. His most influential work focuses on the bilateral axillo-breast approach (BABA) for robotic thyroidectomy, where he demonstrated that this scarless technique yields surgical outcomes comparable to open conventional thyroidectomy while offering superior cosmetic results. This landmark study, with 47 citations, established BABA as a viable alternative for patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. Dr. Jung further advanced the field by identifying predictive factors for difficult robotic thyroidectomy, helping surgeons better select candidates for the procedure. In breast cancer surgery, he has been at the forefront of endoscopic and robot-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy. His 2021 study comparing single-incision endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy to conventional approaches, cited 33 times, showed that minimally invasive techniques can achieve excellent oncologic safety while preserving the breast envelope. More recently, his 2025 work on robot-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy continues to refine these techniques. Dr. Jung’s contributions have helped shape modern surgical oncology, demonstrating that robotics can reduce scarring and recovery time without compromising cancer outcomes.
