Sergio Bagnato is a leading researcher at the intersection of neurology and rehabilitation robotics, with a primary focus on severe disorders of consciousness (DOC) and stroke recovery. His work uniquely bridges the gap between neuroplasticity biomarkers and cutting-edge robotic therapy. In a landmark 2020 study, Bagnato demonstrated that serum BDNF levels—a key neurotrophin for synaptic plasticity—are significantly reduced in patients with DOC, and crucially, that these levels remain unaltered even after robot-assisted lower-limb training.
