About

Selim Ayhan is a pioneering spine surgeon and researcher whose work sits at the intersection of robotic surgery and minimally invasive spinal techniques. His primary research focus is the application of advanced robotic platforms—specifically the Da Vinci Xi Surgical System—to complex spinal procedures, with the goal of enhancing surgical precision while reducing patient trauma. In his landmark study, "Extreme lateral lumbar interbody fusion surgery with a robot-assisted system in a swine model," Ayhan demonstrated the technical feasibility of performing endoscopic discectomy and XLIF cage insertion using a fully robotic approach. This work represents a critical proof-of-concept for translating robotic assistance from general surgery into the demanding field of spinal orthopedics. Although early in his career, with this study accruing 3 citations, Ayhan’s contributions are foundational for a new generation of robot-assisted spine surgery. His research addresses the pressing need for less invasive alternatives to traditional open fusion, potentially leading to shorter recovery times and fewer complications. As a researcher bridging engineering and clinical practice, Ayhan is helping to define the future of precision spinal care.
