Scott Burleigh is a pioneering figure in the development of Disruption Tolerant Networking (DTN), a protocol suite designed to bring reliable, internet-like communication to the most challenging environments—from deep space to terrestrial disaster zones. His foundational work has been instrumental in enabling NASA’s vision for resilient data transmission across interplanetary distances, where traditional TCP/IP fails due to signal delays and intermittent connectivity. Burleigh’s research focuses on the architecture and implementation of DTN for deep space robotic exploration, as seen in his 2017 paper outlining new capabilities that allow spacecraft to autonomously store and forward data despite frequent link disruptions.
