About
Saugata Datta is a leading astrobiologist and planetary scientist whose research focuses on Martian subsurface habitability, cave exploration, and the search for life beyond Earth. He is best known for conceptualizing the Mars Astrobiological Cave and Internal habitability Explorer (MACIE), a New Frontiers-class mission that proposes to investigate lava tube caves on Mars—offering a novel, drilling-free approach to accessing the planet’s subsurface.
