About
Roger Wiens is a pioneering planetary scientist whose work has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of Martian geology and habitability. His primary research areas include planetary geochemistry, astrobiology, and the development of advanced robotic instrumentation for in-situ space exploration. Wiens is best known as the Principal Investigator for the ChemCam instrument suite on NASA’s Curiosity rover, which uses laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy to remotely analyze rock and soil compositions—a breakthrough that has enabled over 800,000 laser shots on Mars and revolutionized how we study planetary surfaces. He also leads the SuperCam instrument on the Perseverance rover, further expanding our ability to detect organic compounds and minerals. Among his notable contributions, Wiens conceptualized the Mars Astrobiological Cave and Internal Habitability Explorer (MACIE), a New Frontiers mission concept that proposes using lava tube caves to assess subsurface habitability without drilling—directly addressing key goals from the Decadal Survey and Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group.
