Rongguang Zhang is a structural biologist whose research centers on the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis, with a particular focus on the enzymes that build and anchor the protective capsules of deadly pathogens. His landmark work on *Bacillus anthracis*, the causative agent of anthrax, has provided critical insights into how this bacterium evades the immune system.
