About

Roland Snooks is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of generative design, robotic fabrication, and biological co-creation. His work fundamentally reimagines architectural production through multi-agent algorithms and stigmergic processes, where form emerges from decentralized computational behaviors rather than top-down design. Snooks’s research on bio-scaffolds represents a paradigm shift, establishing an integral connection between form and materiality by enabling biological materials to become active co-creators in the design process—a co-creation between human, machine, and natural intelligences. His contributions to behavioral tectonics, demonstrated through agentBody prototypes, compress traditional tectonic hierarchies into non-negotiated, synthetic relationships where expression, ornament, and structure are inseparable. With multiple papers accumulating 13 citations each, Snooks has developed innovative fabrication methodologies including carbon fibre-infused 3D printed tectonics and software platforms for architectural robots. His work on stigmergic accretion and reinforcement learning in generative design processes, part of his speculative Artificial Agency project, pushes beyond conventional parametricism toward architectures that exhibit intuitive behavior. Through this body of work, Snooks has established himself as a leading voice in the movement toward computationally emergent, biologically integrated, and robotically fabricated architectural futures.
