About
Ricardo L. Carrau is a pioneering head and neck surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped the surgical management of complex skull base and oropharyngeal malignancies. His primary research focuses on the development and refinement of minimally invasive surgical corridors, particularly through transoral robotic surgery (TORS) and endoscopic endonasal approaches. Carrau’s landmark 2013 study on combining TORS with endoscopic endonasal techniques for extensive skull base tumors (107 citations) established a paradigm for resecting previously inoperable lesions in the clivus and infratemporal fossa. He has also been instrumental in defining the “inside-out” anatomy critical for robotic surgery, as detailed in his 2016 work on the lateral oropharyngeal wall and parapharyngeal space (38 citations).
