About
Rey-Heng Hu is a pioneering surgeon whose work has fundamentally reshaped the landscape of minimally invasive hepatobiliary and transplant surgery. His research centers on the development, refinement, and validation of robotic techniques for complex procedures, particularly major hepatectomy and living-donor liver transplantation. Hu’s landmark 2016 studies, each garnering over 140 citations, established the learning curve for robotic major hepatectomy and demonstrated its oncologic equivalence to open surgery for hepatocellular carcinoma. His most impactful contribution is arguably the first large-scale description of a pure robotic living-donor right hepatectomy, a procedure of extreme technical difficulty that he showed could be performed safely, offering donors a truly minimally invasive option. Beyond the liver, Hu extended the frontier of robotic surgery to renal transplantation, proving the feasibility of a retroperitoneal, robot-assisted approach.
