Renato Costi is a pioneering surgeon whose research has significantly advanced the fields of minimally invasive surgery and splenic preservation. His work is defined by two major contributions: the systematic analysis of partial splenectomy and the early evaluation of robotic surgery for gastro-oesophageal reflux disease. In his landmark 2018 systematic review, "Partial splenectomy: Who, when and how," Costi synthesized data from 2,130 published cases (57 citations), establishing evidence-based guidelines for when and how to safely perform this organ-sparing procedure—a critical contribution that helps patients avoid the lifelong risks of total splenectomy. Earlier, Costi was at the forefront of robotic surgery research, publishing foundational studies on robotic fundoplication (2002–2004, 33 citations). His work critically assessed the theoretical advantages of robotic assistance against real-world challenges, tempering early hype by noting that the approach remained "experimental" and had not achieved wide diffusion. By providing an honest, balanced evaluation of robotics in general surgery, Costi helped shape realistic expectations for the field. His research continues to guide surgeons in making evidence-based decisions about both splenic preservation and the adoption of new surgical technologies.
