R. C. Watkins is a planetary geologist whose research focuses on the Moon’s most ancient and enigmatic terrains, particularly the South Pole-Aitken (SPA) basin—the largest and oldest impact structure on the lunar surface. Watkins’s major contributions center on landing site selection and certification for sample return missions, most notably as a key investigator for the MoonRise New Frontiers mission concept. This ambitious proposal aimed to land in the SPA basin, collect pristine samples, and return them to Earth for detailed mineral, chemical, petrologic, geochronologic, and physical properties analyses—work that would directly address fundamental questions about the Moon’s early evolution and the bombardment history of the inner solar system.
