About
Paul May is a leading urologic oncologist whose research centers on optimizing surgical outcomes for bladder cancer patients undergoing robot-assisted radical cystectomy (RARC). As a key contributor to the International Robotic Cystectomy Consortium, May has fundamentally advanced our understanding of this complex procedure. His landmark 2017 study on intracorporeal urinary diversion, cited over 200 times, demonstrated that completely intracorporeal techniques yield comparable outcomes to open approaches, reshaping surgical practice. May has systematically addressed the most challenging complications following cystectomy, including ureteroenteric strictures and parastomal hernias, identifying predictors and optimal management strategies. His work extends beyond clinical outcomes to surgical quality and education—he developed the Pelvic Lymphadenectomy Assessment and Completion Evaluation (PLACE) tool and the Cystectomy Assessment and Surgical Evaluation (CASE) training instrument, enabling objective assessment of surgical performance.
