P. K. Bhartia is a pioneering figure in atmospheric remote sensing, best known for his transformative work on aerosol and ozone observations from space. His research centers on the development and application of satellite-based ultraviolet (UV) measurements to characterize atmospheric composition, with a particular focus on aerosol optical properties and trace gas retrieval. Bhartia’s most influential contribution is the creation of a long-term record of aerosol optical depth using data from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) on Nimbus-7 and Earth Probe satellites, a dataset that has garnered over 589 citations and remains foundational for climate and air quality studies.
