Dr. Obiyemi’s most notable contribution is his pioneering study, "Identification of Bots and Cyborgs in the #FeesMustFall Campaign" (2022), which provided the first systematic evidence of social robot activity within South Africa’s historic student-led protest movement. By developing and applying detection algorithms to Twitter data, he demonstrated that both fully automated bots and semi-automated cyborg accounts were actively used to amplify, distort, or undermine the campaign’s messaging, thereby exposing a vulnerability in online activism.
