O. Wayne Isom is a pioneering cardiothoracic surgeon whose work has advanced the frontiers of minimally invasive cardiac surgery. His research centers on the comparative effectiveness of robotic-assisted and thoracoscopic techniques, with a particular focus on improving patient outcomes in lung cancer surgery. Isom’s landmark 2014 study on robotic-assisted versus thoracoscopic lobectomy, cited 128 times, demonstrated that robotic approaches can achieve comparable oncologic results with potentially reduced morbidity, helping to establish robotic surgery as a viable alternative in thoracic oncology. Earlier, in 2003, he reported the first successful resection of a symptomatic pericardial cyst using the Da Vinci™ surgical system, a 29-cited case that showcased the feasibility of computer-enhanced telemanipulation for complex cardiac procedures. As a professor and former chair of cardiothoracic surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine, Isom has trained generations of surgeons and championed the integration of cutting-edge technology into clinical practice.
