About

Nina Zhang is a pioneering gynecologic surgeon whose work is redefining the boundaries of minimally invasive surgery for complex pelvic conditions. Her research centers on three critical areas: optimizing surgical approaches for early-stage cervical cancer, managing rare and severe pathologies like intravascular leiomyomatosis, and tackling the technical challenges of robotic surgery for extremely large uteri. Zhang’s most impactful study, a retrospective analysis of 238 patients, compared survival outcomes across four radical hysterectomy techniques—abdominal, laparoscopic, robot-assisted, and vaginal—providing crucial evidence for surgical decision-making in early-stage cervical cancer. She has also demonstrated the feasibility of a multidisciplinary, robot-assisted approach for the life-threatening condition of intravascular leiomyomatosis with intracardiac extension, a procedure requiring exceptional technical skill. Most recently, her work at a high-volume center has focused on identifying risk factors and optimal strategies for robotic hysterectomy in uteri weighing over 1000 grams, a procedure often considered prohibitive. With over 9 citations across her key works, Zhang is establishing herself as a leading voice in advancing robotic and minimally invasive techniques, directly improving outcomes for women facing the most challenging gynecologic surgeries.
