Michael Lee investigates the intersection of social robotics, audio perception, and computational modeling of human behavior. His work addresses a critical challenge for domestic robots: distinguishing between real human conversation and sounds from televisions or other media. In his 2023 paper “Is Someone There or Is That the TV? Detecting Social Presence Using Sound,” Lee developed audio classification methods that enable robots to accurately identify whether a co-located person is present, a fundamental capability for natural human-robot interaction. Earlier, Lee explored individual differences in strategic decision-making through his 2012 study “Modeling individual differences in socioeconomic game playing,” where subjects played the Hawk-Dove game against both simulated and embodied robotic agents. This work integrated neurobiologically plausible models of action selection with game theory to understand risk-taking and cooperative behavior.
