About
Michael H. Antoni is a pioneering health psychologist whose research lies at the intersection of stress, coping, and psychoneuroimmunology. He is best known for his groundbreaking work demonstrating that cognitive-behavioral stress management interventions can meaningfully alter immune function and quality of life in cancer patients. With over 500 publications and more than 30,000 citations, Antoni’s contributions have fundamentally reshaped our understanding of how psychological processes influence biological outcomes. His landmark studies, including the widely cited "Cognitive-behavioral stress management intervention decreases the prevalence of depression and enhances benefit finding among women under treatment for early-stage breast cancer," have shown that targeted psychosocial programs can reduce cortisol levels and enhance immune responses. More recently, Antoni has explored digital delivery of mindfulness interventions, as in his 2024 paper on using virtual humans to reduce stress in university students—a timely innovation addressing mental health access. A Distinguished Professor at the University of Miami, he has received numerous awards, including the American Psychological Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Antoni’s work continues to inspire researchers and clinicians seeking to bridge psychology and medicine.
