About
Michael E. Sondheim is a leading figure in planetary instrumentation and in-situ exploration, whose work has been pivotal to NASA’s most ambitious Mars and lunar missions. His primary research areas include X-ray spectroscopy, robotic arm sensor systems, and the geochemical analysis of extraterrestrial surfaces. Sondheim’s most significant contribution is as the lead developer of PIXL (Planetary Instrument for X-Ray Lithochemistry), a micro-focus X-ray fluorescence spectrometer mounted on the Perseverance rover. This instrument, detailed in his highly cited 2020 paper (135 citations), has been essential for identifying chemical elements in Martian rocks and selecting samples for future return to Earth.
