About
Mary Walicki is a leading urologic surgeon and researcher whose work centers on refining robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) to improve patient outcomes and minimize complications. Her most impactful contributions address two critical challenges in prostate cancer surgery: rectal injury and postprostatectomy incontinence. In her seminal 2011 study on rectal injury during RARP (67 citations), she provided the first systematic analysis of its incidence and management, highlighting that this complication is often underreported due to limitations in the Clavien grading system. This work established a framework for better intraoperative recognition and standardized reporting. Walicki also pioneered the "bladder neck plication stitch," a novel technique designed to accelerate urinary continence recovery after RARP (31 citations).
