Mark R. Haussler is a pioneering figure in vitamin D and calcium endocrinology, whose research has fundamentally shaped our understanding of how vitamin D3 functions at the molecular level. His seminal work, including the highly cited 1976 paper "1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D3: Mode of action in intestine and parathyroid glands, assay in humans and isolation of its glycoside from Solanum malacoxylon," established the mechanistic framework for how the active form of vitamin D3 regulates calcium homeostasis.
