About

Mark Bolton has made transformative contributions to the understanding of osteoarthritis at the molecular level, pioneering the application of proteomics to cartilage biology. His landmark 2004 study, cited over 160 times, demonstrated that proteomic analysis could successfully characterize the secretome of articular cartilage, revealing increased type II collagen synthesis in osteoarthritic tissue. More significantly, this work identified inhibin βA (activin A) as a previously unrecognized regulatory molecule for chondrocytes, opening new avenues for understanding cartilage pathophysiology and potential therapeutic targets.
