About

A. Michelle Wallace is a leading figure in musculoskeletal biology, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of osteoarthritis (OA) pathogenesis. Her research centers on the molecular mechanisms of cartilage degeneration and repair, with a particular focus on proteomic profiling and the role of growth factors in joint disease. In her landmark 2004 study, cited over 160 times, Wallace demonstrated that proteomic analysis could be applied to living cartilage tissue, revealing a surprising increase in type II collagen synthesis in OA—challenging the long-held view that cartilage in OA is simply failing to repair itself.
