About
Marian Grade is a pioneering surgeon whose work sits at the intersection of colorectal oncology, robotic surgery, and bionic reconstruction. Her primary research focuses on improving functional outcomes for patients with rectal cancer, particularly through the development and refinement of pelvic intraoperative neuromonitoring (pIONM). Her landmark 2015 paper on this technique, which has garnered 20 citations, demonstrated how robotic-assisted low anterior resection can preserve anorectal, urinary, and sexual function—areas long neglected in radical cancer surgery. Grade has also made significant contributions to lymphedema surgery, comparing donor-site complications in lymph vessel transplantation and free vascularized lymph node transfer (2021, 8 citations). In a striking example of cross-disciplinary innovation, her 2023 work combined robotic harvest of the rectus abdominis muscle with targeted muscle reinnervation to improve myocontrol and reduce pain in a transradial amputee. Beyond the operating room, she led a modified Delphi process to create Germany’s first national curriculum for minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgery (GeRMIQ, 2024).
