About
M. Bernas is a pioneering figure in the development of robotic observatories for the study of the high-energy universe, particularly gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). As a key architect of the Burst Observer and Optical Transient Exploring System (BOOTES), Bernas helped establish a groundbreaking, stereoscopic ground-support facility designed to provide rapid, simultaneous optical follow-up of GRB events detected by space-based observatories like ESA’s INTEGRAL satellite. This work, detailed in the foundational 1999 paper (66 citations), laid the critical groundwork for autonomous, wide-field optical monitoring.
