About

Liguo Tan is a robotics researcher whose work spans planetary exploration, biomimetic mechanisms, and perception in dynamic environments. His early contributions include the development of SR2, a long-range planetary rover prototype capable of traversing kilometers per day through Mars-like terrain. His 2004 paper on simplified navigation and traverse planning (7 citations) introduced a sensor and control system that enabled the rover to autonomously navigate using waypoints spaced approximately 100 meters apart, advancing the feasibility of long-duration planetary missions. More recently, Tan has focused on cable-driven hyper-redundant robotic arms (CHRA), inspired by snake-like biomimicry, which offer unparalleled dexterity in confined spaces compared to traditional rigid arms. His 2024 review of CHRA (2 citations) consolidates key design principles and applications. Additionally, his 2023 work on MoTI (2 citations) tackles the challenge of moving object identification in SLAM, improving localization and mapping robustness in natural dynamic scenarios. Tan’s research demonstrates a sustained commitment to enabling autonomous systems to operate effectively in unstructured, real-world environments.
