About

Dr. Li Xie-Carson is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of social media, digital culture, and human–non-human interaction. Her key research areas include influencer marketing, netnographic methodology, and the emerging phenomenon of non-human influencers—ranging from virtual avatars and robots to animals and inanimate objects. Her most-cited work, “Not so different after all? A netnographic exploration of user engagement with non-human influencers on social media” (2023, 61 citations), makes a major contribution by challenging anthropocentric assumptions in influencer studies. Through a novel application of more-than-human netnography, she demonstrates that audiences engage with non-human influencers in ways strikingly similar to their human counterparts, revealing the fluid boundaries of authenticity, personality, and social connection in digital spaces. This work has been instrumental in expanding the theoretical and methodological toolkit for studying posthuman digital cultures. Dr. Xie-Carson’s research is widely cited by scholars in marketing, communication, and human–computer interaction, and her innovative approach has been recognized as a key reference for understanding the evolving landscape of social media influence in an era of synthetic and non-human actors.
