About
Dr. Lance Tavana is a pioneering reconstructive microsurgeon whose work centers on the intersection of advanced robotics and autologous breast reconstruction. His primary research focus is the refinement of the deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap procedure, the gold standard for natural breast reconstruction. Tavana’s major contribution is demonstrating the feasibility and safety of using the da Vinci robotic system for the intra-abdominal harvest of the DIEP flap, a technically demanding step traditionally performed via open surgery. His landmark 2018 case report, “Robotic‐assisted deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flap abdominal harvest for breast reconstruction,” has garnered 76 citations, establishing him as a key figure in the emerging field of robotic microsurgery. This work has been instrumental in reducing donor-site morbidity and improving surgical precision. By translating robotic assistance from urology and gynecology into complex reconstructive procedures, Tavana is helping to define a new standard of care, offering patients a less invasive path to reconstruction while maintaining excellent aesthetic outcomes.
