About

Kun Yao is a pioneering urologic surgeon whose research centers on minimally invasive surgical techniques for penile and prostate cancers, with a particular focus on fluorescence-guided lymph node dissection. His most impactful work introduces indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging to guide robotic bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy for penile cancer—a technically demanding procedure critical for preventing lymph node metastasis. In a landmark 2022 study (8 citations), Yao detailed the "light green up" hypogastric subcutaneous approach, demonstrating how real-time ICG visualization can improve dissection efficiency and reduce complications. He followed this with the first prospective, single-blind randomized controlled trial (2023, 7 citations) confirming the safety and efficacy of ICG-guided inguinal lymph node dissection, providing Level 1 evidence for this innovative technique. Beyond penile cancer, Yao has advanced robotic prostate surgery, describing a novel extraperitoneal single-site multiport robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (ssmpRARP) using the da Vinci Si platform. Through propensity score matching, he showed this approach offers comparable oncologic outcomes to conventional multiport surgery while potentially reducing morbidity. With cumulative citations approaching 20 across his key works, Yao is establishing himself as a leader in fluorescence-guided urologic oncology, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with robotic surgery.
