Dr. Keith D. Paulsen is a pioneering figure in biomedical engineering, whose work has fundamentally advanced the fields of image-guided surgery and medical imaging. His research focuses on developing computational models and imaging technologies to improve surgical precision and patient outcomes. Dr. Paulsen’s landmark study, “Intraoperative Brain Shift and Deformation,” with 488 citations, provided the first quantitative analysis of how the brain moves during surgery, revealing that preoperative images become inaccurate by up to a centimeter. This seminal work established the critical need for intraoperative imaging and deformable registration, directly influencing the design of modern neurosurgical navigation systems.
