About

John Rietbergen is a pioneering urologic surgeon and researcher whose work has fundamentally shaped the landscape of robotic prostate cancer surgery. His landmark 2001 study, “Robotically Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy: Feasibility Study in Men” (289 citations), was among the first to demonstrate the clinical viability of robotic assistance for this complex procedure, helping to launch a new era in minimally invasive urology. Building on this foundation, Rietbergen has become a leading advocate for optimizing functional outcomes after radical prostatectomy. His major contribution is the clinical implementation and validation of the NeuroSAFE technique—intraoperative frozen-section analysis of the neurovascular bundles. Through a series of high-impact studies (including a 2022 paper with 40 citations and a 2023 paper with 22 citations), he has shown that NeuroSAFE significantly increases the rate of nerve-sparing surgery without compromising oncological control, thereby improving postoperative urinary continence and erectile function. His 2024 work further demonstrates that centralized, high-volume use of NeuroSAFE improves surgical margin control. Rietbergen’s research bridges the gap between technological innovation and tangible patient benefit, making him a key figure in the pursuit of “trifecta” outcomes—cancer control, continence, and potency—in prostate cancer care.
