John Afthinos is a surgical innovator whose research focuses on the intersection of robotic surgery, nerve regeneration, and advanced intraoperative imaging. His most impactful work addresses a challenging clinical problem: the debilitating compensatory sweating that can follow thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis. In his landmark 2008 study, "Robotic intercostal nerve graft for reversal of thoracic sympathectomy," Afthinos proposed a novel, robot-assisted technique to reverse the sympathectomy by implanting an intercostal nerve graft, demonstrating its feasibility in a large animal model.
