Jinfu Zhu is a pioneering cardiothoracic surgeon whose research focuses on advancing minimally invasive cardiac surgery, particularly the repair of atrial septal defects (ASDs). His major contributions center on developing and refining total thoracoscopic techniques that reduce surgical trauma and improve patient outcomes. In his highly cited 2014 study, Zhu demonstrated that totally thoracoscopic ASD repair significantly reduces systemic inflammatory reaction and myocardial damage compared to conventional open-heart surgery, marking a critical step toward safer, less invasive procedures. Building on this work, his 2018 paper introduced a total endoscopic approach performed on a beating heart without cardioplegic arrest, eliminating the need for robotic assistance and further minimizing physiological disruption.
