About
Dr. Jiayi Gu is a pioneering gastrointestinal surgeon at Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, whose work sits at the cutting edge of robotic surgery and artificial intelligence. Dr. Gu’s primary research focus is the clinical translation and technical refinement of advanced robotic platforms for minimally invasive gastric procedures. In a landmark achievement, Dr. Gu led the inaugural total laparoscopy-assisted total gastrectomy using the Da Vinci robotic system, a procedure conducted under the innovative RENJI-GISH (Robotic Enhanced Neurocomputing Joint Intelligence Gastrointestinal Surgery Hub) framework. This work, detailed in a 2025 case report, represents a significant step toward integrating AI-driven decision support with robotic precision. To further validate these technologies, Dr. Gu has also conducted rigorous preclinical studies, including a porcine model evaluation of the novel Carina Platform for partial gastrectomy, demonstrating its safety and technical feasibility. These foundational studies, though early in their citation lifecycle, are critical for establishing the evidence base required for widespread clinical adoption. By bridging the gap between experimental robotics and practical surgical application, Dr. Gu is helping to define the next generation of intelligent, minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery.
