About
Dr. Ji Meng Lao is a pioneering researcher in ophthalmic microsurgery, with a primary focus on advancing robot-assisted techniques for delicate retinal procedures. His most notable contribution is the groundbreaking feasibility study on robot-assisted retinal vascular bypass surgery (RVBS), conducted in an ex vivo porcine model. This work introduced a novel surgical system featuring two independent robotic arms, designed to overcome the inherent limitations of human tremor and precision in microvascular anastomosis. By systematically comparing robot-assisted outcomes with traditional freehand methods, Dr. Lao demonstrated the potential for enhanced accuracy and success rates in this highly challenging procedure. Though early in its citation impact, with 8 citations to date, this study represents a foundational step toward translating robotic assistance into clinical ophthalmic surgery. His research addresses a critical need in retinal vascular occlusion treatment, where bypass surgery could restore blood flow and prevent irreversible vision loss. Dr. Lao’s work stands at the intersection of biomedical engineering and ophthalmology, offering a promising pathway for future innovations in microsurgical robotics.
