About

Jeroen Raes is a leading figure in gut microbiome research, whose work has fundamentally reshaped our understanding of how microbial communities influence human health. His research centers on the interplay between diet, the gut microbiota, and systemic diseases, with a particular focus on inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic disorders, and the role of specific dietary components. Raes is perhaps best known for pioneering the concept of enterotypes—distinct, stable bacterial community structures in the human gut—and for his landmark studies linking red wine consumption to increased gut microbiota α-diversity, as demonstrated across three independent cohorts (84 citations). His contributions extend to developing novel computational tools for metagenomic analysis, enabling high-resolution mapping of microbial functions. With over 30,000 citations, Raes’s work has not only advanced fundamental microbiome science but also opened new avenues for personalized nutrition and therapeutic interventions. He is a professor at the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Microbiology, where his lab continues to unravel the complex dialogue between our microbial inhabitants and our health.
