About
James C. Lester is a pioneering figure in artificial intelligence and education, best known for his foundational work on pedagogical agents—autonomous, lifelike characters that inhabit digital learning environments to engage students in rich, face-to-face interactions. Since the 1990s, Lester has shaped this paradigm, demonstrating how animated agents can foster deeper learning through dialogue, gesture, and emotion. His landmark paper, “Face-to-Face Interaction with Pedagogical Agents, Twenty Years Later” (2015), with over 220 citations, synthesizes decades of progress and remains a touchstone in the field. In “Pedagogical Agents: Back to the Future” (2018), he reflects on the evolution and enduring promise of agent-based learning. More recently, Lester has turned his attention to K–12 AI literacy, as seen in his 2021 study on how elementary students conceptualize artificial intelligence—work that aligns with global efforts to integrate AI into curricula. With hundreds of citations and a career bridging foundational theory and modern educational challenges, Lester’s research continues to define how intelligent systems can support human learning.
