About
Jacob Rubenstein is a pioneer in adaptive neural control and sensory-motor coordination. His seminal 1989 paper, “Implementation of an adaptive neural controller for sensory-motor coordination,” introduced the INFANT controller—a groundbreaking system that learns to coordinate movement through direct experience rather than pre-programmed models. This work demonstrated how a neural network could autonomously adapt to unexpected changes in a robot’s physical geometry and to variations in object location, orientation, shape, and size.
