About

J. Giammarco is an observational astronomer whose work focuses on the detection and characterization of small bodies in the outer Solar System. As a key member of the Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS), Giammarco contributed to the design and operation of a pioneering multi-telescope robotic observatory at Lulin Observatory in Taiwan. The survey’s primary goal is to search for occultations of stars by Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs), aiming to determine the population and size distribution of small icy bodies beyond Neptune. Giammarco’s most-cited paper, “The Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey: The Multi-Telescope Robotic Observatory” (2009), with 30 citations, provides a detailed technical description of the four 0.5-meter, wide-field robotic telescopes and their versatile capabilities, which also enable the study of early optical GRB afterglows. A subsequent paper (2006, 7 citations) outlines the survey’s methodology for detecting trans-Neptunian objects.
