Dr. J. D. Goguen is a pioneering figure in autonomous planetary landing systems, whose work has been instrumental in enabling safe, precision touchdowns on Mars. His primary research areas include machine vision, image-based velocity estimation, and real-time sensor fusion for extraterrestrial robotics. Goguen’s most significant contribution is the development of the Descent Image Motion Estimation System (DIMES), the first autonomous machine vision system ever used to land a robotic payload on another planet.
